THE TIME OF DISTANCE
ist eine Ausstellung zeitgenössischer Kunst mit einer Reihe von exakt synchronisierten Events vom 18. bis 27. April 2008 in Berlin und Helsinki.

The Time of Distance wurde unter der kuratorischen Leitung von Kym Ward und Elina Vainio von : www.transidency.org, einem jungen KünstlerInnen Kollektiv, initiiert und ist in Kooperation mit dem Kuratorenteam des Projektraumes FIELD weiter entwickelt worden.

Die Gruppenausstellung ist Teil von : www.helsinkissberlin.de, einem einmonatigen Kunst - und Musikfestival, das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Finnland-Institut in Deutschland, der Botschaft von Finnland und anderen Kooperationspartnern organisiert wurde.

Während sich die beiden Städte Berlin und Helsinki im April „näher kommen" unterstützt The Time of Distance den kulturellen Austausch, indem das Ausstellungsprojekt finnische KünstlerInnen nach Berlin bringt und vornehmlich in der deutschen Hauptstadt beheimatete KünstlerInnen in Helsinki vorstellt.

VERNISSAGE MIT PERFORMANCES VON ARNE DE BOEVER UND JULIA PREZEWOWSKY
Bei der Vernissage wird der Text des Literaturwissenschaftlers Arne de Boever „Rethinking Simultaneity“ von verschiedenen SchauspielerInnen frei im Raum performt.

Der autodidaktische Musiker Jaakko Eino Kalevi aus Helsinki wird zur Ausstellungseröffnung in Berlin seinen Mix aus Elektro, Funk, Disco und anderen Genres zum Besten geben.

MULHOLLAND DR. – MARATHON: PERFORMANCE VON SANNI PRIHA
Wie oft muss ein Film gesehen werden, um vollständig in seine fiktive Welt einzutauchen? Wie lange ist es möglich sich aktiv und bewußt in zwei Welten zu bewegen? Die “Marathon-Performance” untersucht, welchen Einfluss die fortwährende Wiederholung des Films bei gleichzeitiger permanenter Bewegung auf die Wahrnehmung von Wirklichkeit hat.

TRANSIDENCY & FUTURE SHORTS - KURZFILMABEND MIT ANSCHLIESSENDER PODIUMSDISKUSSION
Parallel zur Ausstellung findet ein synchronisiertes Kurzfilm-Screening - organisiert von Transidency und Future Shorts, dem globalem Kurzfilm Netzwerk - statt. Freunde des Kurzfilms können sich auf ein speziell zusammen gestelltes Programm freuen, das in Berlin im Acud Kunstverein, und in Helsinki im Kino Andorra zu sehen sein wird.
So wird z.B. der Film Milan (2007) von dem Serbisch-Deutschem Regisseuren Michaela Kezele & Kathrin Henkel gezeigt,
in dem zwei kleine Brüder inmitten der NATO Bombenangriffe in Jugoslawien im Wald Verstecken spielen.

FIELD DISKURSLABORATORIUM MIT CHRISTINE NIPPE, MORTEN DYSGAARD, LAURA HORELLI
Das FIELD Diskurslaboratorium zu The Time of Distance widmet sich insbesondere den Themen Simultanität, Zeitgenossenschaft, Identität und Stadt. Die Podiumsgäste sind die freie Kuratorin und Stadtanthropologin Christine Nippe und die KünstlerInnen Morten Dysgaard und Laura Horelli. Moderation: Kym Ward.

Christine Nippe hat Europäische Ethnologie und Kulturwissenschaften an der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin sowie Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Freien Universität Berlin studiert. Zur Zeit arbeitet die Stadtanthropologin und und Kunstwissenschaftlerin als freie Kuratorin u.a. für die 5. berlin biennale und schreibt ihre Dissertation zum Thema: KUNST UND STADT. Bildende Künstler in New York und Berlin: zum symbolischen Kapital von Metropolen.

Morten Dysgaard (*1976 in Kopenhagen) - in der Ausstellung mit seiner Arbeit Spiral of gazes vertreten - beschreibt in seinen Filmen
das Spannungsfeld und den Widerspruch zwischen der Verortung in kultureller Identität und globalem Leben. Morten Dysgaard hat seinen Master of Fine Arts (MFA) an der Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Kopenhagen absolviert. Er wurde bereits international in verschiedenen Festivals sowie in Galerien und Museen ausgestellt. So z.B. in der Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Schweden (2004), im Kunstforeningen Gl. Strand, Dänemark (2006) und bei The Lab, San Francisco, USA (2007). Morten Dysgaard hat bereits zahlreiche Stipendien erhalten, fünfmalig davon vom Danish Arts Council.

Laura Horelli (*1976 in Helsinki) ist in der Ausstellung mit der Soundcollage Kolminkertaiset ikkunat (Dreifachfenster)
, eine Kooperation mit Anu Pennanen, vertreten. 2007 hatte sie eine Residenz in der Villa Aurora, Los Angeles, wo sie folgende Arbeit ausgestellt hat: Virtuosic Siblings: Berlin / LA Festival of Film / Art, Red Cat, Goethe Institute, Villa Aurora, Los Angeles. Weitere Ausstellungen: Interviews, Reports and Diaries, book presentation and 1 day project, Galerie Barbara Weiss, Berlin (2006, L´Europe en devenir, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris (2007), Altenburg: Provinz in Europa, Eine künstlerische und kulturtopographische Anthologie, Lindenau-Museum, Altenburg (2007), Auszeit - Kunst und Nachhaltigkeit, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz (2007), Retour d'Italie. Documents en déplacement, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Paris (2007), ), „I have been considering making a video about a ski resort in Northern Finland and was showing it in Galerie Barbara Weiss“, Berlin (2007), Darkroom, Turku Art Museum, Finnland (2008).

THE TIME OF DISTANCE is a series of simultaneous art events taking place in Helsinki and Berlin from 18 to 27 April 2008.

Opening: Friday, 18 April 2008, 6 pm
Duration at FIELD: 19 April to 10 May 2008

The Time of Distance is initiated by Transidency, a young artist collective and has been further developed in co-operation with curators from FIELD Project space. The Time of Distance is part of ‘Helsinkiss Berlin’ www.helsinkissberlin.de, a month long festival of art and music from Helsinki organized by the Finland Institute in Germany and the Finnish Embassy amongst others.

As the two cities cozy-up in April, The Time of Distance wants to facilitate this cultural exchange by bringing Finnish artists to Berlin, and by showcasing German talent in Helsinki. Transidency will be bringing together Finnish, German and Berlin-based artists.

MULHOLLAND DR. – MARATHON PERFORMANCE BY SANNI PRIHA
How often must a film be seen, before the viewer can enter the fictitious world of film? In this particular (pseudo-)scientific research, the test subject is exposed to the film Mulholland Drive by David Lynch. Is it possible for one to exist in two places, the “real” and the fictive at the same time? Can we split both the conscious mind, and our body into two, in order to reach another world?

TRANSIDENCY & FUTURE SHORTS – SHORT FILM EVENING WITH Q&A
Running in parallel to this exhibition, Transidency has coupled up with the global short film network – Future Shorts, to present a screening related to the exhibition. The film evening takes place in Acud Kunstverein, Berlin, and Kino Andorra, Helsinki.
One of the films on our reel will be Milan (2007), by the Serbian/German Directors Michaela Kezele & Kathrin Henkel, in which, in the midst of the 1999 NATO air-raids in Yugoslavia, two brothers make plans to play hide and seek in the forest.

FIELD DISCOURSE LAB WITH CHRISTINE NIPPE, MORTEN DYSGAARD, LAURA HORELLI
FIELD will host a Discourse Lab around the themes of: 'Simultaneity and the Zeitgeist, Identity and Urban Space', with the curator and urban anthropologist Christine Nippe and the artists Morten Dysgaard and Laura Horelli. Moderation by Kym Ward.

Christine Nippe studied European Ethnology and cultural science at Humboldt University in Berlin,as well as business economics at the Freie Universität Berlin. At the moment the urban anthropologists and art theorist works as a freelance curatorial assistant for the 5th Berlin Biennale and is writing her dissertation on the theme of 'Art and the City - Visual Artists in New York und Berlin: about the Symbolic Capital of the Metropolis'.

Morten Dysgaard's
(*1976 in Copenhagen) featured work in the exhibition is his film Spiral of gazes. His films ask pertinent questions about social conventions and in doing so, bend these norms. His work deals with the process of self perception which arises when one is being confronted with and reflected by a foreign identity. Morten has been awarded a number of scholarships, including five by the Danish Arts Council. He has exhibited internationally in a wide range of museums, galeries and festivals such as Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Schweden (2004), im Kunstforeningen Gl. Strand, Dänemark (2006) und bei The Lab, San Francisco, USA (2007).

Laura Horelli (*1976 in Helsinki) is showing her sound collage Kolminkertaiset ikkunat (Tripple Window) - a colaboration with Anu Pennanen.
